Among some of the prominent sporting personalities, batting hero Rahul Dravid and Olympic Bronze medal winner Mary Kom were named the recipients of the Padma Bhushan award. The names of the players were announced on Friday – the eve of the Republic Day. The Padma Bhushan award is certainly a look at the achievements of the sporting heroes on various international levels.

Rahul Dravid had been India’s most technical batsman of his times. That is why he was called as the “Wall” of Indian cricket. He dominated both the one-day and Test format of the game. He was also a wicketkeeper

for India for a brief period as well as led the Indian side too. Dravid announced his retirement from cricket last year.

In his illustrious career, Dravid had played 164 Tests matches and went on to score 13,288 runs. As an Indian player, only Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of him with 15,645 runs. Dravid had a healthy Test average of 52.31. In ODIs too, he had scored more than 10,000 runs, 10,889 to be exact. He played 344 one day matches and had an average of

39.16.

Awarding the The Padma Bhushan award to the 29-year-old Mary Kom is the right step taken by the Indian government. It is recognition of the feat that the boxer has achieved. She has also proved to be an inspiration for many other aspiring boxers, especially women. She has proved that even after marriage and being a mother, it was possible for her to represent India at the Olympics and also win a medal.

Mary Kom had won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. That is not all. Mary Kom has also won the world championship as many as five times. No wonder, she is one of the most able recipient of the Padma award. There is one more feather in Mary Kom’s cap. She has the honor of having one at least one medal in every world championship and she has repeated the feat six times.

Congratulations to Rahul Dravid, Mary Kom and all the other sports personalities on receiving the Padma Bhushan awards.
